Before you ship: the routing guide attached to your purchase order is the authority, and requirements vary by facility and change without much notice. Treat the figures below as the commonly published baseline for planning, then confirm against your current guide.
Amazon FBA differs from the store retailers in one important way: the limits are enforced by an automated receiving process, not a person exercising judgement. A pallet over 72 inches or 1,500 pounds is rejected at the fulfilment centre unless the shipment is enrolled in the Heavy & Bulky programme, and a rejection means the inventory does not go live.
The 1,500 lb ceiling is the notable one. It is the lowest weight limit among the major retailers — Walmart allows roughly 2,100 lb and Target around 2,000 lb — so a dense product that palletises fine for a store DC may need to ship on more, lighter pallets to Amazon.
| Requirement | Commonly published rule |
|---|---|
| Footprint | 40 × 48 in GMA standard |
| Material and entry | Wood, 4-way entry |
| Treatment | ISPM-15 certified for international movement |
| Maximum height | 72 in including the pallet base |
| Maximum weight | 1,500 lb including the pallet base |
| Stretch wrap | Clear wrap, minimum three turns, securing load to the pallet |
| Labels | Applied to the outside of the wrap, scannable without unwrapping |
| Cartons | Individual boxes still follow standard FBA box size and weight rules |
Clear wrap and labels-outside are not cosmetic. Receiving is a scan operation; anything that forces a worker to cut wrap to find a label creates an exception, and exceptions are where FBA shipments stall.
| Destination | Max height | Max weight |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon FBA | 72 in | 1,500 lb |
| Walmart | ~72 in | ~2,100 lb |
| Target | ~78–84 in, DC-dependent | ~2,000 lb |
| Costco | ~58 in | Varies |
If you supply more than one of these, the binding constraints are Costco on height and Amazon on weight. A single build spec that satisfies both is possible but usually wasteful, so most suppliers maintain destination-specific configurations.
| Issue | Consequence |
|---|---|
| Over 72 in or over 1,500 lb | Rejected at receiving unless enrolled in Heavy & Bulky |
| Overhanging cartons | Damage in transit and handling exceptions on arrival |
| Labels under the wrap | Cannot be scanned; shipment held as an exception |
| Non-ISPM-15 pallet on an international lane | Held at border, not just at the FC |
| Loose or under-wrapped load | Load shift, damaged units, potential rejection |
A rejected pallet is worse than a late one — the units are not receivable, so they generate no sales while the problem is resolved. Note that the pallet rules here are separate from FBA fulfilment fees, which are calculated per unit; see the Amazon dimensional weight calculator for that side.
72 inches including the pallet base. Pallets exceeding this are rejected at receiving unless the shipment is enrolled in the Heavy & Bulky programme.
1,500 lb including the pallet base. This is the lowest ceiling among the major retail destinations — Walmart commonly allows around 2,100 lb and Target around 2,000 lb — so dense products often need to be split across more pallets for FBA.
A 40 × 48 inch GMA standard wooden pallet with 4-way entry, ISPM-15 certified where the shipment crosses a border. See the GMA pallet specification for construction details.
Clear stretch wrap with a minimum of three turns securing the load to the pallet, and labels applied to the outside of the wrap so they can be scanned without cutting it open. Clear wrap matters because it lets receiving read carton markings through it.
No. Pallet limits govern the shipping unit; individual cartons on that pallet still have to meet standard FBA box size and weight rules. Both are checked.
Not directly. Fulfilment fees are calculated per unit from the unit's own dimensions and weight, using a 139 divisor — see the Amazon dimensional weight calculator. Pallet compliance affects whether your inventory is received at all.
