Pallet overhang
Overhang is any carton that sticks past the pallet deck. A half-inch hang on all four sides turns a 48 × 40 GMA into a 49 × 41 handling unit, so two no longer sit cleanly across a 98.5 inch trailer. Most retailer routing guides forbid it. The pallet calculator leaves overhang off unless you enable it.
What it costs
- Receiving: FBA and grocery DCs reject or rework overhanging pallets.
- Transit: lips catch rack uprights and trailer walls.
- Cube: a 48×40 becomes something else; floor math on this site assumes the named footprint.
If a carton only fits with overhang, change the carton or the pallet — do not hang the load.
