What is NMFC?
The National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) is the rulebook LTL carriers in North America use to describe freight. Every commodity has an item; most items now class by density on a 13-band scale effective 19 July 2025. Handling, stowability and liability can still push a shipment off the density number. The class calculator on this site estimates density class only.
Docket 2025-1 moved thousands of items onto density. The 13 subprovisions run from class 400 (<1 lb/ft³) to class 50 (≥50 lb/ft³). Classes 77.5, 110, 150, 200 and 500 still exist for special-characteristic freight but are not density-scale outputs.
Wrong class on the BOL is how you buy a reweigh/reclass fee. Measure the handling unit as it ships.
